What is Alopecia?

Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss. There are many types of hair loss including alopecia areata, androgenic areata, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, frontal fibrosing alopecia, and traction alopecia.

Alopecia areata is a common autoimmune condition, in which a person’s immune system attacks the hair follicles causing the hair to fall out. The extent of hair loss can vary from person to person.

Androgenic alopecia is also known as male- or female-patterned hair loss. Genetic and environmental factors likely play a role and are related to hormones called androgens.

Treatment

Although there is no cure for alopecia, your hair follicles can sometimes regrow hair early if scarring has not occurred. The earlier hair loss is detected and treated, the better the outcome. At DSCCA, our dermatologists can develop a treatment plan to help re-grow your hair. While there are a number of treatment options to stimulate and increase hair growth, including over-the-counter and prescription medication, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and laser therapy, the treatment plan will be designed specifically for you.
