What is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo is a condition characterized by the loss of pigment in the skin. Caused by the loss or destruction of pigment-producing cells called melanocytes, the effect of vitiligo results in white patches or spots that can appear anywhere on the body. Family history, autoimmune conditions, stress, sun exposure, and/or chemical exposure are among the risk factors that can increase a person’s likelihood of developing vitiligo, which may occur at any age.

Treatment

In order to properly diagnose vitiligo, our dermatologist will review your medical history and examine your skin, and in some cases, may require a blood test to help determine if there are any other conditions related to vitiligo. While some patients choose to accept and embrace the change in their skin and leave their vitiligo untreated, there are treatment options available.
